Cookouts, fireworks, and good company often come to mind when one thinks about Independence Day. From a young age, every American has heard the stories of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the trials it took to become a sovereign state. However, we tend to overlook the German-Americans who had a large influence on the freedom the United States enjoys today.  On July 5, 1776, the German-American newspaper, Der Wöchentliche Pennsylvanischer Staatsbote, was the first paper — in any language — to announce the signing of the Declaration of Independence the day before.  The newspaper also published a German translation of the Declaration of Independence on July 9, 1776.

The German-American Heritage Center will be hosting GAHMUSA’s own exhibit 100 years of Hollywood – The Laemmle Effect.  The exhibit will open on July 24th and will run until October 30th.  During the time of the exhibit the Center will be hosting a series of activities which include: a presentation by Deborah Fletcher Blum ” Films, History, Hollywood and Judaism: Carl Laemmle German-American Film Pioneer, German-Jewish Immigrant and WWII Humanitarian”;  the German’s in Hollywood Lecture Series; and a kids Short Filmmaking workshop.

We hope our GAHF members will visit the German-American Heritage Center and enjoy the many events associated with this historic exhibit.

“In the steps of Luther”,  the GAHF member trip has changed its date.   Delays in finishing the refurbishing of key buildings of the Luther trip have led to the decision of moving the trip to 2017.  We are excited about the interest shown by our members and hope that if you have not registered can do so.

The Embassy Adoption Program brings local students to the GAHM!

A city-wide initiative that pairs DC fifth- and sixth-graders with embassies across Washington, DC, students from Ms. Chambers and Ms. Kirk’s fifth-grade class at Powell Bilingual Elementary School in NW visited the GAHM today as part of their year-long partnership with the Embassy Adoption Program and the German Embassy.

The GAHF celebrates Museum Education Day with Seaton Elementary School!

As part of the museum’s efforts to expand outreach to local schools and to provide students with enriching cultural and educational opportunities, the GAHF welcomed Mr. Coward’s and Ms. Richards’s fifth-grade classes to the GAHF for a day of fun and learning. This program,  sponsored by Staedler,  is the first outreach to neighborhood schools within the context of the current exhibit ” “In Praise of the Pencil”.
