The German-American Heritage Foundation of the USA®

German-American Heritage Museum of the USA™

The German-American Heritage Museum of the USA™ opened in March, 2010 in a building once known as Hockemeyer Hall. Renovations were completed by the GAHF after acquiring the building in 2008. Located on 6th Street NW in the heart of the old European-American section of Washington, the Museum sits in what is now a thriving commercial neighborhood.

Frequently Asked Questions

How large is the museum, and how much time should I plan to spend there?

Our museum exhibit space is approximately 1,200 square feet, and it consists of a mix of our permanent exhibit showcasing the journeys of German-speaking immigrants to the United States, and changing temporary exhibits. The topics vary widely, ranging from the German roots of Hollywood to Jewish lawyers during the dark time of Nationalsocialism to biographies of Black Germans in the past and present.

We cannot really tell you how much time you should spend here, as it depends on your schedule and your interest. Some people just stop by for a brief visit, while others stay an hour or more reading the timeline, watching reenacted history on one of the multiple TV sets, and learning about modern-day Germany beyond the popular tourist destinations. The good news is that you can always come back.

Can I use an image from your Website for personal use or for a school project?
Yes, you can. While you generally don’t need permission for using a photo for your Facebook page, blog or school project, we do ask that you credit us (German-American Heritage Museum). We’d also love to hear from you, and encourage you to share your project with us. Just like everybody us, we feel flattered when somebody talks about us in a good way.
Do you accept item donations?
Firstly, thank you for thinking of us. We’d love to be able to accept every treasured item, but our space and capacity are limited. We love books, but we do not have the shelving space to appropriately store them. However, we do make exceptions, and have accepted some items in the past. On occasion, we also actively look for loans for specific exhibits.
May I create a link to your site?
Absolutely. We welcome and encourage links to our Website.
Can I host a special event at the museum?

Yes, you can. For more information, please review our rental guidelines or email [email protected]
