Alpine Singers – Spring Concert

April 16 @ 19:00 - 21:00
Tickets

The ever-popular Alpine Singers, one of Washington, DC’s premier a cappella groups, will be back at the German-American Heritage Museum on Thursday, April 16 from 7 – 9pm. Founded in 1996 by the late Herbert Traxler and his wife Carol Traxler, they perform a broad repertoire of Austrian and German music ranging from Volksmusik to Jodler, and from Baroque music to the works of living composers.

The program includes a wonderful mix of Austrian and Bavarian folk songs and some dances. If you are so inclined, you can even dance along with us! Immerse yourself in the culture of the German-speaking Alpine region, and celebrate spring with us. You will also have a chance to eat traditional open-faced sandwiches (Abendbrot – belegte Brötchen).

PROGRAM

I tua was i will
Und i håb dir in die Äugerl g’schaut
Da draussen im Wald
Three Zwiefacher are next in the program as an introduction to the audience of this traditional dance and musical form, infrequently heard in the US except among some folk dancers.  A Zwiefacher is a dance from Bohemia, Austria, or Bavaria that is a partner dance with a pattern of waltz and pivot (Dreher) steps that differs for each piece of music.  For the viewer it is hard to distinguish from a waltz, with the couples turning clockwise and the hands positioned either in the standard dance position or with the shoulder hold.  But for the dancers, on the other hand, it is very challenging, requiring each dancer to pay close attention to the musical structure, so they will know whether to take a waltz or pivot step.  This attention must continue throughout the dance, for patterns may be intricate.
Eisenkeilnest (Zwiefacher)
Alte Kath (also known in dialect under the spelling Oide Kath) (Zwiefacher)
Suserl (Zwiefacher)
The program continues with a Fensterlied (where a young man visits his intended by climbing through a bedroom window), a folk song to a poem by Goethe, and a Jodler (a song without a traditional text).
Dås Dirndl, dås håt hålt an saggirschn Zorn (Fensterlied)
Heidenröslein (folk song to the poem by Goethe)
Hodaroiri (Jodler)
BREAK
Iss mit mir, trink mit mir, geh mit mir hoam (conversational folk song from Salzburg)
Der Andåchtsjodler (Meditation Jodler)
Der Saarstoana (Jodler)
Four songs at the end of dance evening.  The musicians for the dance put down their instruments and join all the dancers in a large circle, holding hands. In Austria, such an evening ends with all singing one of these four songs, selected by the host of the evening.
