Washington, DC Premiere of “Hiwwe wie Driwwe” Documentary
Friday, June 21, 6:30 - 9:00 pm
More than 300 years ago Germans from the Palatinate, a region in southwestern Germany, left their ancestral home to seek a new life in Pennsylvania. They brought along their unique dialect, their culture and customs, which eventually came to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch. Even today, almost half a million people still speak a variant of this unique language. A German film team along with protagonist and YouTuber Douglas Madenford went in search of the common roots in Pennsylvania and the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz). The result is a highly entertaining and informative documentary film called Hiwwe wie Driwwe — or Over Here as Over There — which will celebrate its Washington, D.C. premiere at the GAHM. This film is in English, standard German, and Palatine German with English subtitles.
The filmmaker team, led by producers Christian Schega and Benjamin Wagner, will be on site for a lively Q&A session, and DVDs of the film will be available for purchase. DVD price is $15 plus $5 for shipping & handling.
Tickets for GAHF members are $15, and $18 for nonmembers. The price includes light refreshments and beverages.
