Based on the award-winning fiction by Markus Zusak, The Book Thief tells the story of Liesel, an orphaned girl living with an adoptive family in Nazi Germany. Though illiterate when she first arrives on Hans and Rosa’s doorstop, under Hans’ patient instruction she quickly learns to read. As her love for books grows, she earns herself the titular nickname due to her penchant for saving novels that would be otherwise destroyed by the Nazis.

When her newfound family agrees to harbor a Jewish hideaway named Max, Liesel learns just how dangerous mere existence is for those who are not considered citizens under the Third Reich. Amid poverty, near-starvation, and bombings, Liesel and Max form a bond over their shared tragedy and along the way share their love for stories as a form of escape from the reality of life in Germany during WWII.

This is ultimately a story about the power of family, friendship, and words – set against the backdrop of one of history’s most turbulent eras. Featuring renowned actors Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson as adoptive parents Hans and Rosa and Sophie Nélisse as Liesel in a breakout performance, this film has moved audiences since its initial release in 2013.
