Join us at the GAHM for a special welcome of the Gaufest 2019 participants and visitors, and to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend! We will open our museum on Saturday, July 6 from 11 am to 3 pm. This will also be the last weekend of our Culinary Customs: A Taste of Germany exhibit, and we invite you to stop by for a visit along with a cup of beer, a delicious grilled German bratwurst, and a Bavarian pretzel for just $15 if you mention “Gaufest 2019” by July 1.
RSVP is highly encouraged and appreciated, as we need to have an estimate of the number of visitors. Questions? Email us at info@gahmusa.org or call 202.467.5000.
What is the Gaufest? Every two years, some 2,000 fans of Bavarian and Austrian Alpine dancing and traditions come together to celebrate their heritage in four action-filled days of music, dance competitions, traditional dress showcases and workshops. This year, the festivities will be held at the Hilton Hotel on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. Gau is an old German word for a region or a territory, and has lived on in many town names in Austria and Bavaria, with Oberammergau, known for its Passion Play, among the more famous places.
Information about the Gaufest is available here.
