SUMMARY:Alpine Singers - Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nThe ever-popular Alpine Singers\, one of Washington\, DC’s premier a cappella groups\, will be back at the German-American Heritage Museum on Thursday\, April 16 from 7 – 9pm. Founded in 1996 by the late Herbert Traxler and his wife Carol Traxler\, they perform a broad repertoire of Austrian and German music ranging from Volksmusik to Jodler\, and from Baroque music to the works of living composers. \n  \nThe program includes a wonderful mix of Austrian and Bavarian folk songs and some dances. If you are so inclined\, you can even dance along with us! Immerse yourself in the culture of the German-speaking Alpine region\, and celebrate spring with us. You will also have a chance to eat traditional open-faced sandwiches (Abendbrot – belegte Brötchen).  \nTickets\nPROGRAM  \n\n\n\n\nI tua was i will\nUnd i håb dir in die Äugerl g’schaut\nDa draussen im Wald\n\nThree Zwiefacher are next in the program as an introduction to the audience of this traditional dance and musical form\, infrequently heard in the US except among some folk dancers.  A Zwiefacher is a dance from Bohemia\, Austria\, or Bavaria that is a partner dance with a pattern of waltz and pivot (Dreher) steps that differs for each piece of music.  For the viewer it is hard to distinguish from a waltz\, with the couples turning clockwise and the hands positioned either in the standard dance position or with the shoulder hold.  But for the dancers\, on the other hand\, it is very challenging\, requiring each dancer to pay close attention to the musical structure\, so they will know whether to take a waltz or pivot step.  This attention must continue throughout the dance\, for patterns may be intricate.\n\nEisenkeilnest (Zwiefacher)\nAlte Kath (also known in dialect under the spelling Oide Kath) (Zwiefacher)\nSuserl (Zwiefacher)\n\nThe program continues with a Fensterlied (where a young man visits his intended by climbing through a bedroom window)\, a folk song to a poem by Goethe\, and a Jodler (a song without a traditional text).\n\nDås Dirndl\, dås håt hålt an saggirschn Zorn (Fensterlied)\nHeidenröslein (folk song to the poem by Goethe)\nHodaroiri (Jodler)\n\nBREAK\n\nIss mit mir\, trink mit mir\, geh mit mir hoam (conversational folk song from Salzburg)\nDer Andåchtsjodler (Meditation Jodler)\nDer Saarstoana (Jodler)\n\nFour songs at the end of dance evening.  The musicians for the dance put down their instruments and join all the dancers in a large circle\, holding hands. In Austria\, such an evening ends with all singing one of these four songs\, selected by the host of the evening.\n\nFein sein beinander bleibn   (Tirol and Steiermark)\nI bedank mi  (widely known in the alpine area)\nA ganze Weil habn ma heut gsunga und gspielt \nKein schoener Land (widely known in Germany and Austria)\n\n\nIn closing\, the Alpine Singers’ wish for peace\n\nDa pacem Domine\n\n\nPERFORMERS\n\n\n\nCarol Bloomquist Traxler (alto)\nAndrea Bauerfeind  (alto)\nAlyson Miller Miniter  (soprano)\nVirginia Ogris    (soprano)\nMatthew McIntyre  (tenor)\nJackson Sepulveda  (bass)\n\n\n\nTickets:\nMembers: $15\nNonmembers: $20

SUMMARY:Music in Exile Concert on May 13\, 2026 at 6 PM
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate America250 with a PanEuropean Chamber Music Ensemble  \nPlease join the German-American Heritage Foundation & Museum and The United Church + Die Vereinigte Kirche for a special evening of chamber music with a selection of works by Austrian and German exile composers who spent the 1930s and 1940s in the United States. Featured composers include Arnold Schönberg\, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler along with American-born George Gershwin\, and Gustav Mahler\, one of the great Romantic composers and conductors who bridged the gap between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and 20th century modernism. \nMahler had a special relationship with the United States\, and celebrated his New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera on Jan. 1\, 1908 where he conducted Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. He continued to make occasional guest appearances until March 1910\, and symbolized a longing for America (German: ‘Amerika-Sehnsucht’) that played a significant role in pre-World War I Europe.  \nAttendees will enjoy a diverse musical program that highlights the strength and resilience of culture and music as a means of creating connections and understanding by drawing upon the experiences of living abroad and in exile. We hope that you will celebrate the long-standing friendship between Austria\, Germany\, and the United States with us during this special semiquincentennial year.  \nWe are not charging an admission fee\, but please consider making a donation to GAHF and The United Church–either online or in person–for bringing high-quality cultural programming to the Washington\, DC area. Please use the registration form below. \nAbout the Artists: \nStefan Bone is currently Kapellmeister and Répétiteur at the Kiel Opera House. Highlights of the last seasons include conducting Verdi`s Don Carlos\, Falstaff and Otello as well as Prokofiev`s The love for Three Oranges and Puccini`s La Bohème. Since 2022\, he has been Artistic Director of the Chamber Orchestra of the Greater Region\, a paneuropan chamber ensemble based in Saarbrücken. His activities there focus on regional and international cultural cooperation. He completed his piano and conducting studies in Freiburg and Saarbrücken\, is a First Prize Winner of the International Chamber Music Competition Épinal and performs as a sought-after chamber musician and Lied recitalist.\n\n\n\nMichael Müller-Kasztelan has been a member of the soloist ensemble of the Kiel Opera House for 17 years. He has appeared internationally in leading roles from Tamino to Florestan and Paul and will make his debut as Tannhäuser in 2026. Guest appearances have taken him to numerous opera houses and concert halls across Germany and Europe. A passionate interpreter of art song recitals\, he is equally at home in contemporary repertoire\, having created leading roles in world premieres by Jüri Reinvere\, Christóbal Halffter and Marco Tutino. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken and at the Eastman School of Music in New York.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n America250: A Concert for Friendship\n Register for our Pan-European chamber music concert on May 13\, 2026 \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Name of Additional Guest\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n PhoneMobile
