He began his career as a Prussian military officer\, and after arriving in the United States\, he not only revolutionized the Continental Army\, leading them to victory against King George III’s troops\, but his influence continues to this very day. Steuben’s drill manual\, Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States\, became the foundation for the country’s military. Although the tactical maneuvers have evolved\, his core concepts of standardized training\, unit discipline\, sanitation\, and leadership hierarchy continue to shape the modern military major ways. \nJoin us on Thursday\, Sept. 17 at 1 pm ET for a virtual presentation with Mr. Randall Ratje to explore the life and legacy of Baron von Steuben. \nThis is a free event\, but you need to register to receive the Zoom link. He graduated from Valparaiso University School of Law\, in Valparaiso\, Indiana in 1990. Over the latter part of his legal career\, from 1996 to 2021\, he prosecuted Child Abuse and Neglect cases in Family Court in Suffolk County\, New York. He is now semi- retired from the practice of law. \nMr. Ratje graduated from Hofstra University in Hempstead\, New York\, with a Bachelor’s Degree in History in 1987. During his time at Hofstra University\, he was inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta International History Honor Society. \nAs a son of a German immigrant father and of a mother of German American descent\, Mr. Ratje grew up with a sense of pride in his German ancestry. The combination of Mr. Ratje’s love of history with his ethnic pride has spurred his participation in many German American organizations. \nAs soon as he was old enough to vote\, Mr. Ratje followed in his parents’ footsteps by becoming a member of the Steuben Society of America. The Steuben Society is a patriotic organization of American citizens of German descent which has been in existence since May 19\, 1919. \nOver the years\, Mr. Ratje has served the Steuben Society in many capacities. He worked his way up through the board of officers of the Henry E. Steinway Unit\, No. 66\, of Patchogue\, New York\, where he ultimately served two separate terms as Chairman of the Unit. \nMr. Ratje also went on to serve as Chairman of the New York State Council of the Steuben Society from 2001 to 2004. He then served as National Chairman of the Steuben Society from 2004 to 2012. Currently\, Mr. Ratje serves as National Secretary and as Chairman of the Society’s Education Committee. Mr. Ratje is also President of the Steuben Endowment Corporation. \nDuring his tenure as National Chairman of the Steuben Society\, Mr. Ratje also served as a Co-National Chairman of the German American Joint Action Committee\, also known as GAJAC. GAJAC was formed as a partnership between the Steuben Society\, the German American National Congress (DANK) and the United German American Committee of the US\, Inc (now known as the German American Heritage Foundation). \nMr. Ratje also serves on the Board of Directors of the German American Committee of Greater New York which oversees the operations of the German American Steuben Parade in New York City. After the founding of Jamestown in 1607\, the colony continued to expand\, eventually becoming the wealthiest and most populated\, and a move to make the town of Williamsburg the new capital in 1699. Much of the colony’s economic success derived from agriculture and especially tobacco production\, but mining also played a role in Virginia’s economy. Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood actively recruited experienced miners from the Holy Roman Empire to come to Virginia and establish a mining industry. Spotswood had been granted 86\,000 acres in Spotsylvania County\, and his German miners settled in two waves\, first in 1714 and again in 1717. This group was expelled from their homeland by Count Leopold Anton von Firmian (1679–1744)\, Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. On Oct. 31\, 1731\, he issued an Edict of Expulsion demanding from the Salzburg Protestants to recant their faith. Pastor Samuel Urlsperger\, the leader of the Society for Promotion of Christian Knowledge\, called upon King George II of Great Britain for help. The King offered them refuge in his Georgia colony\, which later became the town of Ebenezer. \nLed by Johann Martin Boltzius\, a Lutheran minister from Forst\, a town southeast of Berlin and a teacher at the  Francke Latin School in Halle\, and Israel Gronau\, they arrived in Savannah\, Ga. on March 12\, 1734\, and were welcomed by Governor James Oglethorpe. Dr. Pfanzelter is a professor of contemporary history and digital humanities and the deputy head of the Institut für Zeitgeschichte. \nAs we delve into the history of German-speaking Europe for America250\, we are delighted to offer a lecture on South Tyrol. South Tyrol\, a predominantly German-speaking region\, was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of World War I. In 1919\, under the Treaty of Saint-Germain\, it was annexed by Italy\, despite its largely German-speaking population. This marked the beginning of significant tensions between the local population and the Italian state. The 1946 Gruber–De Gasperi Agreement between Austria and Italy granted limited autonomy and protections for the German-speaking minority. However\, dissatisfaction with the implementation of these rights led to protests and\, in the 1950s and 1960s\, even violent acts by separatist groups. \nA major breakthrough came with the Second Autonomy Statute of 1972\, which granted extensive self-government to South Tyrol. Powers over education\, culture\, and many administrative areas were transferred to the provincial level\, and a system of proportional representation ensured fair distribution of public jobs and resources among German-\, Italian-\, and Ladin-speaking groups. This autonomy framework significantly reduced tensions and became a model for minority protection in Europe. In the 21st century\, South Tyrol is considered one of the most successful examples of regional autonomy. It enjoys a high level of economic prosperity\, political stability\, and cultural coexistence.
