The GermanAmerican Heritage Museum of the USATM officially opened the exhibit entitled The Path to German Unification on October 13th, 2015. This unique exhibit celebrated the 25th anniversary of German reunification, where the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) joined the Federal Republic of Germany to create one nation in 1990.
This exhibit was comprised of 20 posters and was created by the Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SEDDiktatur (The Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship) and the German Federal Foreign Office. The posters were generously donated to the Museum by the German Embassy, Washington, D.C. The exhibit’s poignant narrative is relayed to the visitor in 20 chapters, ranging from topics like the fear and skepticism regarding German reunification to the “Two Plus Four Agreement” which paved the way for unity. A major theme of this exhibit is freedom, as described by U.S.
President Ronald Reagan, “I noticed words crudely spray painted upon the wall, perhaps by a young Berliner, ‘This wall will fall. Beliefs become reality.’ Yes, across Europe, this wall will fall. For it cannot withstand faith; it cannot withstand truth. The wall cannot withstand freedom.”
The exhibit’s official opening, attended by over 30 supporters of the Museum, was a major success. Various school and tourists groups also benefited from its presence in our Museum, in addition to our regular visitors.
